New Delhi, March 8

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Delhi Police tied up with a noted NGO Aarohan to impart self-defence training to 300 school girls and their mothers from under-privileged sections which are vulnerable to sexual crimes.

Three policewomen led by Head Constable Bharti of the Special Police Unit for Women and Children gave a self-defence demonstration in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar about emergency response to eve teasing in buses, Metro, markets and how to neutralise the culprit by "using fingers, fists, kicks and daily use things like a pen, hair pin, book, spoon and duppata."

“You all should download and use 'Himmat' women safety mobile phone application of Delhi Police,” suggested Head Constable Bharti.

Pinky, a government school girl, who attends medical entrance coaching classes at Aarohan, said, “Now, I know where to hit an eve-teaser.” Another girl, Nagma, daughter of a domestic help, said, “Even my mother is feeling confident about fighting off stalkers.”

Area councillor Nutan Kochchar, national-level boxer and fitness expert Neha Vashishth, documentary film-maker Samina Mishra also attended the function based on the “Be Bold for Change” theme of the IWD 2017.

As a special gesture, Hyatt Regency sent food vans to give the participants a special treat. Naturopath Dr Sudha talked about benefits of drinking water and limiting salt in diet.
