New Delhi, August 18

In view of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives on enforcing the ban on plastic bags (less than 50 micron) in Delhi, henceforth, anyone in the national Capital found in possession or use of such carry bags will be liable to pay environment compensation of Rs 5,000 per default and the bags will be seized at the site.

All local bodies, district magistrates and the DPCC will take strict and immediate action towards implementation of directions of the tribunal. The decision was taken at a multi-department meeting on August 16, said an official from the DPCC.

Environment Minister Imran Hussain, who held a review meeting with senior officers of the Environment Department and the DPCC, today directed the officers to enforce prohibition on the sale, storage and use of less than 50 micron plastic carry bags at the shops and other establishments.

To spread awareness regarding the NGT directions, he also directed Department of Environment to issue public notice in newspapers in different languages.

Five teams of DPCC officers have been deployed to check the compliance of the above order and these teams have already started checking compliance w.e.f. 18.08.2017. DPCC teams have found around 05 metric tonne plastic carry bags of less than 50 micron size. Further action is being taken as per law.

Hussain directed that concerted and coordinated efforts are required to be taken regularly by the various agencies charged with this responsibility, viz. municipal corporations/local bodies and Revenue Department.
