The ties between Canada and India are set to improve following an Indian Prime Minister's first stand-alone bilateral visit to Canada in 42 years.

The ties between Canada and India are set to improve following an Indian Prime Minister's first stand-alone bilateral visit to Canada in 42 years. In his three-day Canadian tour Prime Minister Modi signed an agreement that will allow the long-term supply of Canadian uranium to India to resume. The deal, which is the culmination of a long diplomatic effort that preceded Modi taking office, adds to the growing comfort that India has as a user of nuclear energy. Taken along with the deal signed in France, this is a logical culmination of the thaw that started with India and the US signing the agreement for peaceful use of nuclear energy. Canada is also a major exporter of oil, and India has now signed new agreements to increase collaboration in the energy efficiency, oil and gas development and renewable energy.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was warm in his welcome and wholesome in his praise of Modi. He says that the two counties are "natural partners" in a new global economy.  The two governments have found much common ground, and can be expected to build on the breakthroughs that have been achieved during the tour. Canada will invest in India and we can expect closer economic cooperation between the two countries.
As expected, Modi reached out to the diaspora, addressing a massive gathering, and also visiting an important gurdwara and a temple. Canada is home to the largest number of Sikhs outside Punjab. Many people of Indian origin are active politically, some occupying ministerial positions in Canada. Engaging Canadians of Indian origin can narrow the gap, although sometimes it can be uncomfortable. The visit was marred by protests which sought justice for victims of communal violence, and demanded better protection for minorities, and expressed support for secularism. Now that the tour is over, it is time to work on the implementation of the agreements signed, and to deliver what has been promised.
