Agreement signed with Ethiopia on forestry research

A high-level delegation led by Dr Gemedo Dale, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of Ethiopia, visited Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (Solan), to acquire information on forestry education research and technology dissemination.

A high-level delegation led by Dr Gemedo Dale, Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government  of Ethiopia, visited Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni (Solan), to acquire information on forestry education research and technology dissemination.  The delegation comprised 14 representatives of the government, forest officers and scientists, who  evinced  keen interest in acquiring knowledge in the fields of agro-forestry, forest products, tree improvement, food science and technology. Dr Gemedo also requested the university to allow the faculty to impart technical know-how in different fields of forest sciences to students and faculty from different institutions of Ethiopia.  An MoU was also signed between the  Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of Ethiopia, and Nauni university.  Wubalem Todesse, Director-General, Forest Research Institute, Ethiopia, and Dr KS Verma, Director of Research, Nauni university,  signed the agreement in the presence of Vice-Chancellor, Nauni university.

PRO’s post gets clearance

With the key post of public relations officer lying vacant for the past several years, the university’s activities have failed to find adequate media space. Finally, the Finance Department has approved the post. With financial crunch plaguing the university, advertising posts of officials was fraught with lengthy procedures which not only delayed crucial appointments, but also adversely hit the working of various departments. Though a scientist had been entrusted the  PRO’s job on a temporary basis, in the absence of timely information the official could not do justice to the job. 

Earth Hour observed 

Students took out a candle march to observe  Earth Hour on the campus. Lights were turned off for 10 minutes at 8.30 pm. Dr Jagdish Chander, Chief Conservator of Forests, Haryana, highlighted the challenges, scope and solution in the changing forestry scenario. Vice-Chancellor Dr HC Sharma also expressed his views on the topic.

World Meteorological Day

The Department of Environment Sciences celebrated the World Meteorological Day where the department’s space club organised a seminar on “Understanding Clouds”. Dr Satish Bhardwaj, head and professor, dwelt on the impact of pollution on the cloud formation and its consequent impact on the changing climate. Researchers,  including PhD students, highlighted the challenges emerging from the changing environmental scenario on the cloud formation and the need to undertake elaborate research.

3-day exposure visit

In charges of eco clubs of various schools of Chandigarh undertook a three-day exposure visit on “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Related Aspects”.  The programme was organised by the Department of Forest Products where Dr Ravinder Raina, principal scientist,  was the chief guest. Dr Bhupender Dutt, professor-cum-coordinator of the organising committee, welcomed participants. In his inaugural address, Dr Raina shared his experiences with the participants regarding healthy living through plants. He also dwelt on  the vital role played by several medicinal plants.  Dr Kulwant Rai Sharma, professor and head,  highlighted the activities undertaken by the department in the field. Dr Rai also stressed upon the importance of biodiversity of India as well as Himachal and their role in socio-economic development. Dr Meenu Sood, principal scientist, gave an overview of commercially cultivated medicinal and aromatic plants and their importance in enhancing the income of farmers. Dr Kamini Gautam, JRF, highlighted the importance of conservation of RET species with special emphasis on temperate medicinal plants.  Baljinder Kaur, programme coordinator, eco club, Chandigarh, appreciated the efforts and work done by the university in the development of medicinal and aromatic plants. They were also taken to Herbal/Botanical Garden, herbarium, laboratories and model farms.  They also paid a visit  to Shilly based farm of medicinal and aromatic plants.
