The second day of the 5-day residential “Inspire Camp” started off with the first technical session with the eminent scientist Prof JR Singh, Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivering a talk on the gigantic machine called Large Hadron Collider (LHC) used in the discovery of Higgs-Boson Particle at Cern Geneva in the year of 2012.

The second day of the 5-day residential “Inspire Camp” started off with the first technical session with the eminent scientist Prof JR Singh, Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivering a talk on the gigantic machine called Large Hadron Collider (LHC) used in the discovery of Higgs-Boson Particle at Cern Geneva in the year of 2012. His role has been instrumental in the designing of one of the detectors to be placed in the tunnel for LHC in which the services of CTR, Ludhiana, were utilised. The second session started with an insightful lecture by Dr Sudhir Malik, Associate Professor of Physics, University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez, on the topic “Science and Us”. He motivated students learn through the way of the appreciating and celebrating science. He emphasised on the idea of the learning and acquiring knowledge to be the ultimate goal of studying science and not getting good marks only. Science develops problem solving skills and learning science has saved millions of lives. The day concluded with the exposure of Inspire interns to the hi-tech labs of the college where practical demonstrations were conducted. The students also got to interact with state awardee Prem Singh who demonstrated Bernouli’s Theorem, Galileo’s experiment, Newton’s Third law of Motion with the help of interesting activities.

NSS camp

An National Service Scheme (NSS) camp was being organised at Kamla Lohtia College. 100 volunteers and 10 non-volunteers participated in the camp. Students collected necessary materials like sweaters, shawls, blankets for the help of needy people residing at old age home. Two programme officers Dr Mohd Saleem Farooqui and Kavita Arora guided students for social work. Boys as well as girls prepared food, tea and different eatable items. A cultural program was organised by NSS volunteers on traditional theme. Principal Dr Shiv Mohan Sharma, President, management committee; Sunil Aggarwal, vice-president Sandeep Aggarwal appreciated volunteers for their participation.

Varsity pledges to fight social evils

Desh Bhagat University celebrated the New Year by taking a pledge to fight against illiteracy and social evils in the country. New Year was welcomed by holding an Akhand Path for world peace, universal brotherhood and all-round progress. All the members of teaching and non-teaching staff of the university participated in the programme. Chancellor of the university Dr. Zora Singh conveyed his best wishes to the whole Desh Bhagat family and prayed that the year should bring peace, progress and prosperity for the people of the whole world. He also inspired the staff to contribute strongly for the education of the community and removal of social evils. In a special meeting with the staff, chancellor and pro-chancellor said the New Year has come with new hopes and aspirations. We all have to contribute in the development of our country and society. They also urged staff to work wholeheartedly for developing such a mind-set in the society that no woman feels unsafe and no one is exploited or blackmailed. In the afternoon, there was a tea party for all the staff members. The staff enjoyed this programme and greeted one another with good wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Vice-chancellor Dr Shalini Gupta, Registrar, Dr Virinder Singh, controller examinations, Dr IS Sethi, directors and staff members from different faculties were also present. — TNS
