Chandigarh, March 28

The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) today put a stay on the orders of Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, to increase the tuition fee by more than 8 per cent.

The school was required to file a reply in this regard today, but it sought more time to do so. The CJM has now asked school Director/Principal Earnest Charles J Samuel to file reply in this regard by April 5.

Counsel Nitin Goyal said the fee was raised exorbitantly and 141 parents of schoolchildren had filed a civil suit in this regard last week. The parents had stated the fee was almost doubled for Classes Nursery to XII. There has been an increase in the tuition fee earlier also, but was always marginal, he said.

The petitioners added that the fee increase was a violation of the CBSE circular dated June 3, 2016, which stated in Rule 11.1 that fee charges should commensurate with the facilities provided by the institution. They said no such extra facility had been provided or projected to justify such a fee hike.

The parents also sought direction to be given to Secretary Education and DSE to take cognisance of the matter and initiate action against the school.
