Nauni varsity student bags national award

SOLAN: Kiran Thakur, a PhD student of the Department of Fruit Sciences at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, has bagged a national-level “Student of the Year” award from the All-India Agriculture Students’ Association (AIASA) for her outstanding contribution towards empowerment of the youth in agriculture.

Kiran Thakur, a PhD student of the Department of Fruit Sciences at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, has bagged a national-level “Student of the Year” award from the All-India Agriculture Students’ Association (AIASA) for her outstanding contribution towards empowerment of the youth in agriculture.

The jury, headed by Prof RB Singh, Chancellor, and the governing board of the AIASA, nominated her for the award following her contribution in this field, as per a press note here today. The award will be presented by the Union Minister of State for Agriculture on February 20 at Raichur in Karnataka.

Talking to The Tribune, Kiran said different workshops had been organised for educating the youth to opt for agriculture either as a profession or as a stream. Efforts had been made to include agriculture and its allied fields for various jobs at the national and state levels and the major success was achieved when forestry students were considered eligible for the post of agriculture officer in banks.

Thanking Vice-Chancellor Dr HC Sharma and senior professors, including Dr Narinder Sharma and Dr Girish Sharma, Kiran said they encouraged her to work towards this goal. — TNS
