CHANDIGARH: Senators as well as various campus-based student organisations have been batting for a central university status for Panjab University in order to overcome the financial crisis being faced by the varsity.

Senators as well as various campus-based student organisations have been batting for a central university status for Panjab University in order to overcome the financial crisis being faced by the varsity. The proposal is all set to come up at the syndicate meeting of PU scheduled to be held tomorrow.

The proposal has come from Senator Dr Gurmeet Singh. Earlier, the proposal has been discussed at the senate meeting also. The meeting will be chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover.

Several other proposals will also come for discussion at the PU Syndicate meeting, including the seniority of professors and increase in charges of guest houses.

Panjab University will table a proposal for approval to apply for only four courses on one application and approval of fee for admission process through cloud-based online admission management services for selected courses for the academic session 2017-18 during the Syndicate meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow. The Syndicate will also discuss the proposal of the INMO awardees joining BSc (honours) in the department of mathematics without appearing for the PU-CET entrance test.

Appointment of persons who fulfil the eligibility conditions as per the UGC as part-time assistant professors at PU Regional Centre, Ludhiana, and appointment of Prof Nuruddin Farah as visiting professor from outside the country in the department of English and cultural studies will also come for discussion.

The proposal for reservation of two seats in the MDS courses for internal faculty candidates (to be given strictly on merit basis of NEET exam) will also be tabled. The proposal of assignment of faculties to certain fellows will also be tabled at the Syndicate meeting.

Other Proposals

  • Shutting down of the LLM evening course in the department of laws from the next academic session as per the direction of the Bar Council of India (BCI)
  • Recommendations of the regulations committee and representation of the Punjab Government College Professors’ Association to make ex-officio member of the faculties of PU the professors working in the government colleges of Punjab, treating them on par with the university professors
  • 60 seats for BA LLB and LLB courses on the campus of Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Centre, and 60 seats for LLB three-year course, 60 seats in BA LLB (honours) at the University Institute of Laws, Regional Centre, Ludhiana
  • Entrance test for admission to LLB and LLM courses in the department of laws and Panjab University Regional Centre from the coming academic session 
  • Approval of the defence institute of physiology and allied sciences  as a recognised research centre of Panjab University for pursuing research work leading to PhD in the subject of biotechnology engineering
