Punjab first to set up own Bureau of Investigation

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal launc-hed the state Bureau of Investigation (BoI) at the police headquarters here today.

The state government said Punjab has become the first in the country to set up such a wing, bringing all investigation staff of various units under a unified command.

With the setting up of BoI, the investigation functions of Punjab Police have been separated from law and order duties. Badal, accompanied by state Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini, said the new wing would be responsible for all investigation work — from the police station level to the district level and the state headquarters.

“Separate staff have been earmarked for investigations at all three levels,” Badal said, adding the new wing would ensure professional and time-bound investigations. He said the staff of this specialised wing would not be diverted for any other purpose.

He said the bureau would initially have 7,772 personnel on its rolls.

DGP Saini said the new investigation wing would get all facilities and technology to ensure a thorough investigation.

He said the wing would also be equipped with mobile forensic evidence collection units, regional forensic science labs, modern cyber crime unit, and modern interview rooms as well as modern women police stations at all districts.
