The Uttarakhand Pollution Board has initiated action against five sugar mills of Udham Singh Nagar after water samples taken from their premises by a National Green Tribunal (NGT) team were found to be polluted. The NGT team had taken water samples from sugar and paper mills functioning in the Terai region. While the water samples taken from paper mills were found fit according to the pollution control standards, the samples lifted from sugar mills were found unfit.
“The water samples of sugar mills at Bazpur, Gadarpur, Sitarganj, Kiccha and Jaspur were found below the pollution control standards. We have initiated action against these mills under the pollution control law,” said Sompal Singh, regional manager of the Pollution Control Board.
Sompal said the effluent treatment plants in these mills were also found not conforming to the standards.
“The water sample results have proved that sugar mills in the Terai region are polluting nearby rivers, rivulets and land as the pollution control devices installed there are not working according to the standards,” he said.
