The consumption of raw vegetables is propagated by health gurus as the ultimate key to well- being. Fruits and veggies rapidly lose their vitamins and trace elements when they are cooked. A bowl of salad is a quick dish to turn out, and it's perfect too for a summer day. A seven-layer salad originated in America and instantly gained popularity because of the taste and it's visual height and appeal. It has lettuce, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese, onions and hard boiled eggs as the main components. Each of them contains a heap of nutritional benefit.  Bacon is an option that can be replaced with grated carrots.

Method

  • Whisk together the sour cream, mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper. This is your dressing.
  • Place half of the lettuce in the bottom of a trifle dish. Top with half of the peas, red onion, bacon(or carrots), hard-boiled egg, cheese and green onions. Spread half of the dressing over the top.
  • Repeat the layers, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Note: You can play around with the ingredients if you like. Try pineapple, mango, sliced pears, blanched zucchinni, cooked chicken or red bell pepper. Salads tend to become runny if prepared too early. Toss together only 35-45 inured before you're ready to eat.
