KARNAL: Over 70 vehicles were involved in multiple collision in Karnal district that left a woman dead and at least 15 others injured.

Over 70 vehicles were involved in multiple collision in Karnal district that left a woman dead and at least 15 others injured. The multi-vehicle pile-ups took place near Namesty Chowk, Karan Lake and Butana village on National Highway 1 here today.

Pankaj Bala, a resident of Yamunanagar, died in the mishap near Namesty Chowk. She was heading towards Delhi along with other family members.

Experts from the Meteorological Department said low visibility due to smog and foggy conditions resulted in the accidents.

As per the information gathered from Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College Hospital (KCGMCH), the injured include Sandeep, Gulshan, Inderjeet of Panipat; Laxman, Chaman and Anil of Karnal; Ritu, Milan, Bani, Navya,Madhu and Chirag of Yamunanagar; Parkash of Kambopura; Tarik and Ajay of Srinagar.

Over 70 vehicles were involved in the multiple collision. The accidents caused traffic jams on the road and the police used cranes to remove themangled vehicles.

Panipat: A bus driver was killed and about 30 persons injured in 35-vehicle pile-up on NH-1 between Machroli village and Haldana border in Samalkha today.

The first multiple collision involving a Volvo and a roadways bus took place near Karhans village on NH-1 in Samalkha. The driver of the Volvo bus — Major Singh of HP — died in the accident. The injured bus passengers were taken to the Samalkha community health centre and private hospital in Sewah village.

The second such incident took place near Geeta Ashram in Samalkha. As many as 16 persons were admitted to the CHC from where five were referred to Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College for Women, Khanpur. Nine injured were admitted to private hospital near Sewah village. A few were discharged after first-aid.

In another incident, a person was injured after his bike was hit by acar near the block development and panchayat office in Samalkha.

Rohtak: Four motorcycle-borne youths were killed after they were hit by a vehicle near Ghilod village of the district today. While three ofthe youths died on the spot, the fourth one succumbed to injuries at the PGIMS in Rohtak.

The accident led to collision between several other vehicles in which six persons were injured. The police said the mishap took place because of poor visibility due to dense smog. One of the deceased was a resident of Rukhi village in Sonepat district. Yesterday, six persons were killed and 13 others injured when their van collided head-on with a truck in Sawant Khera village in Haryana’s Dabwali amdist fog.

Director of the Chandigarh’s Met Department, Surinder Paul told PTI today that there can be variety of reasons behind fog making an early appeareance this season in some parts.

He said the fog, which is seen in some parts,can become worse when it gets mixed with smoggy conditions, escalating the problem further.

Paul also said that as there was not much wind movement during past few days, it had led the situation remain static.
