Appointment at MDU’s ex-centre illegal, claims panel

A case of forgery and illegal appointment of a guest faculty at the erstwhile postgraduate region centre of the Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here has come to the fore.

The case pertains to 2013, but it came to the fore recently when a three-member committee of senior professors inquired into it following a complaint filed by Gaurav Dalal, a former assistant professor (guest), Indira Gandhi University (IGU) here, at the CM Window.

Sources said the committee termed the appointment and payment released to the guest faculty as illegal and recommended a regular inquiry.

Dalal had accused the then officiating director and chief coordinator (examinations) at the regional centre of making fake appointment of Virender Singh as an observer for the examinations in 2013, despite being not on the payroll of the centre. He also charged the director of forgery of Rs33,600 by showing payment made to Virender.

“The inquiry committee comprising Prof AK Rajan, Prof NR Garg and Prof JP Yadav from the MDU first investigated whether Virender was appointed as guest faculty or not as only the guest faculty can be assigned the duty of an observer,” said Dalal, adding that the committee found no document available regarding his appointment, while the payment was made to him from February 14, 2013 to April 23, 2013, as guest faculty.

The committee said only two candidates — Harvansh and Pooja — were recommended by the selection committee for the appointments of guest faculty in the History Department, where Virender’s name was nowhere mentioned. Significantly, Virender could not give satisfactory reply when the inquiry committee questioned him about the interview date and papers allotted to him for teaching.

“Virender was never appointed as guest faculty whereas his salary cheques were also received by another assistant professor of the department,” states the committee.
