Karnal, June 18

INLD and BSP workers on Monday protested the Bastara toll plaza authorities’ move to not exempt local commuters from paying fee. They held a demonstration at the Mini-Secretariat here and handed over a memorandum to the SDM addressed to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Narinder Sangwan, former Gharaunda MLA and senior INLD leader, who led the protest, said the toll plaza was shifted from Samanabahu on the Karnal-Kurukshetra border to its present location in the middle of Gharaunda and Karnal district headquarters over three years ago. At that time, they had opposed the shifting of the toll plaza, following which they were assured that local commuters would not have to pay any toll fee, he said.

“Now, the company has issued a new directive of not giving any exemption to the local commuters, forcing them to protest it,” he said.

District INLD president Yashvir Rana said they would start an agitation in case the new directive was not withdrawn.
