SONEPAT: State BJP media in charge Rajiv Jain on Friday claimed that the government has given the administrative approval for setting up a government girls college in Sonepat after overcoming all technical problems.

In a press statement, Jain said, "The college will be constructed on 4.26 hectare in HUDA Sector 12. The land has been given on 99-year lease to the Department of Higher Education at the annual lease amount of Rs 100." OC

Motorcyclist killed in collision with cow 

Rohtak: A man was killed and another injured as their motorcycle collided with a stray cow at Kheri village near Meham township in the district. The deceased has been identified as Suresh Beniwal, a farmer of the same village. The police said he was going towards Kheri from Meham on Wednesday. On the way, his motorcycle collided with a black cow which he could not see due to darkness. He was shifted to a local hospital where he was declared dead on Thursday. His friend riding pillion also suffered injuries in the accident. TNS

Farmers seek 14-hr power supply  

Sonepat: Farmers on Friday urged the state government and the power authorities to increase the power supply to tubewells from eight hours to 14 hours to save the paddy crop. The demand was raised at a meeting of the district unit of the Bhartiya Kisan Sangh at the PWD rest house in Rai. The meeting was presided over by Tahar Singh, district president. They pointed out that the standing paddy crop needed irrigation and there was shortage of rainfall. The canal-based water supplies were not sufficient to meet the required demand, they said. Virender Chotiwala, state general secretary, and other office bearers of the district unit of the sangh were present at the meeting. OC
 

IAS officer shifted

Chandigarh: The government has issued transfer and posting orders of an IAS officer and an HCS officer. Chander Shekhar, Special Secretary, Forests Department, has been given the additional charge of Director, Art and Cultural Affairs Department, relieving Vivek Atray of the charge. HCS officer Sushil Kumar has been posted as Managing Director, Cooperative Sugar Mill, Sonepat. TNS

Drug case: Jail for 2

Kurukshetra: The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurvinder Kaur has sentenced Rampal of Karnal district and Beero, a local resident,  to 10-year jail for illegally possessing cannabis. They were arrested on December 13, 2014, from the Umri road after 20 kg of cannabis was recovered from their vehicle. A fine of Rs 1 lakh each has been imposed on the convicts. TNS

10 Punjab drug peddlers held

Karnal, August 18

A team of CIA-II last night arrested 10 drug peddlers from Punjab and recovered 32 gm of smack from them. Jaspal Singh Dhillon, in charge, CIA-II, said they were members of an inter-state gang of drug peddlers. 

He said they were arrested near Nilokheri on a tip-off. They had been identified as Ravi, Sukhbir Singh, Rajbir Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Sandeep, Manjinder,  Tajinder Singh, Sukhwant Singh, Baljeet Singh and Manjoot Singh, all residents of Ludhiana in Punjab, he said. —TNS

Roadways to add new buses to its fleet

Kurukshetra, August 18

Transport Minister Krishan Pal Panwar today said the Haryana Roadways had a fleet of 4,200 buses which would be increased to 5,000 during the current financial year.

At a function in Jind’s Manoharpur village today, Panwar said the government was committed to strengthening public transport sector. He said the ongoing process to recruit 4,000 employees as driver, conductor and technicians was aimed at strengthening the Haryana Roadways.

On the occasion, several INLD workers joined the BJP in the presence of Panwar. 

Panwar said the BJP government had focused on inclusive development. 

Since assuming power, the Chief Minister had announced 3,450 development and policy announcements and nearly 2,000 had already been executed, he said. —TNS

Masked gunmen loot petrol pump

Sonepat, August 18

Three car-borne armed robbers looted a car and Rs 50,000 from the Pritam Filling Station on the Delhi bypass at Kharkhoda town in the district late last night.  

The robbers, with their faces covered, looted cash from the petrol pump cashiers and  from the customers present at the petrol pump. The looted car belonged to a motor mechanic, however, it was found abandoned on the outskirts of the town. 

After receiving information, Virender Sharma, SHO, Kharkhoda police station, and Indeevar, CIA Inspector, reached the spot. On the complaint of salesman Satbir, a case had been registered against unidentified persons. It was not the first incident of loot at this petrol pump. About Rs 26,000 were looted by two motorcycle-borne armed youths in September 2014 and Rs 25,000 on July 14 this year.
