Cantt board makes hay out of waste

The Ambala Cantonment Board has adopted a slew of measures to tackle horticulture waste and sewage water in order to keep the area clean.

The fallen and dry leaves along with cut grass are being collected and converted into green manure with the help of a green waste re-processor installed recently at Patel Park. A decentralised sewage treatment machine has been set up on pilot basis to treat waste water from a public toilet so it can be used for watering plants.

Speaking to The Tribune, Varun Kalia, Chief Executive Officer, Ambala Cantonment Board, said, “So far nearly 500 kg manure has been generated by composting dry leaves.”

A solid waste management plant has been constructed on pilot basis at the Topkhana Bazaar. The Cantonment Board has over the last two months segregated and stocked nearly 1.2 tonne recyclable waste.

The CEO said, “Cow dung and bio-degradable kitchen waste is used to produce bio-gas, which will be used as a substitute for LPG and for generating electricity. The board is trying to set an example for the municipal bodies to emulate.”
