The Child Welfare Committee, Ambala, has decided to approach the Additional Chief Secretary (Education) over the alleged lackadaisical attitude of officials of the local Education Department.

Gurdev Singh, a member of the CWC, says: “The committee regularly visits government and private schools and observes a large number of irregularities. After raising repeated objections, a majority of the schools have displayed the child helpline number, but students have no idea how to use it. Students confuses the women helpline number with the child helpline number”.

He says schools are still not serious about the security of children and only formalities are being done. In some schools even teachers are not aware of the child helpline number. The purpose will not get served by just displaying the number in the schools and teachers will have to tell students about its use, he adds. Children should be taught about a good touch and a bad touch but no attention is being paid.

“Besides, complaint and suggestion boxes are being used as showpieces in the principal’s room. We have failed to understand the utility of the complaint boxes in the principal’’s room as students will hesitate from coming there. The boxes must be kept at a place where students can easily drop their complaints,” he says.

The CWC member says poor infrastructure in government schools is another major issue that needs to be addressed. During an inspection of a government school at BC Bazaar in Ambala Cantonment on Tuesday, it was observed that a few rooms were in a dilapidated condition and switchboards and glasses of almirahs were broken and the school lacked cleanliness.

“Directions are being issued repeatedly. Officials of the Education Department accompany the CWC during inspections and their seniors are also being apprised about the issues, but to no avail. There is no point in visiting schools and sending directions to the officials repeatedly when you are going to find the same problems again. It has been decided to approach the ACS (Education) and apprise him about the situation. The committee will request the ACS to issue necessary directions to the officials of Education Department,” Gurdev Singh adds.
