Gurgaon, October 4

Air pollution in the city has touched 115 mcm mark.

A review of city’s air with respect to car-free days showed that a day before the last car-free day, the pollution levels in four chosen areas was around 80 mcm, which reduced to 17 mcm on the car-free day, but then resumed.

“After 40 mcm, the air becomes hazardous and the current level shows that we are inhaling poison. If things are not controlled at this point, we will soon be hit by respiratory and skin diseases. Gurgaon is reeling under emissions from factories and vehicles,” said a senior official of the Pollution Control board.

The district unit of the board has been put on high alert and asked to take immediate action. The officials now plan to revisit the notices issued by them to the industries identified as polluters.

In July, the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) had decided to digitise the monitoring of pollutants released in air and in water by industries.

There are seven grossly polluting units identified in the city and eight in Manesar. Efforts are also being made to get the corporate to agree on common transport for all employees and make every day a car-free day.
