The protest by the Akhil Bharatiya Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS), demanding reservation for the Jat community under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category, halted traffic on the National Highway-2 (Mathura road) for about half an hour today.

The district unit of the samiti submitted a memorandum to the authorities later.

“The protest was a part of the nationwide programme of the ABJASS over the Centre’s failure to provide reservation to Jats,” said Avtar Sarang, president of the district unit.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Mahavir Prasad said officials, including the tehsildar, got the NH-2 cleared.

ABJASS president Yashpal Malik, meanwhile, said the samiti would be protesting outside the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s house on August 4.

“Today’s protest was a warning to the Centre. The samiti will intensify its agitation if the government fails to fulfill its promise,” he said, adding the government ought to come out with a Bill providing reservation to the community.
