Panipat, April 22

A farmer, Satbir (38), of Dehra village near Samalkha reportedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance.

Satbir’s family said he was upset over crop failure and his inability to pay off his debts. He is survived by his wife, Kavita, three daughters and a son.

His younger brother, Satnaryana, said most of his wheat crop on 1.5 acres was damaged in rain and hailstorm. “He went to his field last night, saying he was going to harvest the crop. When he did not return, we went to the field and saw him lying there,” he said.

The police were informed and the body was taken to the Civil Hospital for the postmortem.

This is the second incident of farmer death within 24 hours in the district. Govardhan (60) of Maandi village died of heart attack on Thursday after seeing the damage to his crop caused by rain and hailstorm.
