Kurukshetra, January 21

Cyber experts are scanning mobile phone users’ data on 110-km stretch for a clue in the case of unnatural deaths of two students from Jhansa village in the district.

According to the investigators, the state police chief is being apprised of the case progress after every five hours till midnight.

The body of a 15-year-old Dalit girl was found near a canal at Budha Khera village in Jind district, whereas the decomposed body of 18-year-old Balmiki youth Gulshan was fished out from Bhakra canal in the district. Both reportedly went missing from their village on January 9.

Call details of innumerable mobile phones between two crime spots are being scrutinised minutely to connect crimes. “So far, there is no witness in the case. Also, the families have also not pointed finger of suspicion on anyone behind the unnatural deaths. Our teams are relying on scientific evidence for a lead in the case,” said an official, who is part of the investigation.

Police said it was premature to confirm that the girl was subjected to rape or gangrape. “The autopsy conducted by a three-member panel of doctors at the PGIM, Rohtak, has stated about severe injury marks on the body, including her private organs. The opinion given to the media by a forensic expert, who was not even a member of the panel that performed the autopsy, that the girl was gangraped, has not been accepted by the police. Only a chemical analysis of the viscera can give a firm opinion on the sexual assault, cause of death, severe injuries and approximate time of death etc,” said an official.

He said Gulshan’s post-mortem report hints at suicide angle, but even that would be subjected to be corroborated by the forensic experts.
