As many as 16 students from eight colleges of the district took part in the contest and highlighted merits and demerits of demonetisation. The participants who spoke in favour of motion highlighted how the step taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016, benefited the economy besides, keeping a check on terrorism, black money and fake currency.

Ankita Sindhu (Dyal Singh College) claimed it to be a masterstroke and said that it had benefited the country in many ways, while Simar (KVA DAV College for Women) lauded the step taken by the Prime Minister and said that it had stopped terror funding.

Those who spoke against the motion emphasised that the step was taken in haste that led to inconvenience to crores of people. Highlighting mismanagement, they said that it had resulted in loss to economy as well as human lives. Some of them also stated that demonetisation had failed to shift the economy to cashless system. One of them pointed out that a large amount of black money was still invested in real estate and gold.

Ashima (DAV College for Women) said that a little fake currency was detected with this step, while Vashudhra (DAV PG College) claimed it to be a failed step.

Samreet, (Guru Nanak Khalsa College) said that most of the currency in circulation was deposited with banks, but the country was still waiting for the deposition of black money.
