CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Police has come under the judicial scanner, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court issuing notice of motion on a petition allleging extortion of “huge” amounts from innocent persons.

The Haryana Police has come under the judicial scanner, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court issuing notice of motion on a petition allleging extortion of “huge” amounts from innocent persons.

The petitioners, Ashok Kumar and others, claimed that money was being extorted by police officials through touts, who were activist of the ruling BJP.

The petitioners added a case was registered on September 18, 2016, under the PNDT Act and Section 120 B of the IPC at Tohana city police station. After the arrest of some persons, the respondents started getting confessional statements recorded and succeeded in getting the names of some persons included. They started exploiting the situation to extort money.

Seeking directions for protection of life and liberty at the hands of the respondents, including police officials and political influential persons, the petitioners also asked for directions for reinvestigation of the FIR by the CBI or any other independent agency

Taking up the matter, Justice Inderjit Singh directed the Fatehabad SP to provide protection to the petitioners for deposing before the courts in the case registered on April 27 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and in the FIR dated September 18, 2016, under the PNDT Act.
