Panipat, May 24

The thundershowers that lashed the state yesterday disrupted power and water supply in many parts of the city. Trees uprooted along many roads leading to traffic disruption.

A farmer was killed in a village when a high voltage wire fell on him. High-velocity winds uprooted hundreds of poles and trees and normal life was disrupted.

A farmer, Shaym Lal (58) of Chhajpur Kalan village, was found dead in his fields yesterday. “When my father didn’t return home, we went to the fields and found him dead there. High tension wires were lying around him,” said Kala, son of the deceased farmer.

“I have ordered a detailed inquiry in the case,” said Ashwani Raheja, Superintending Engineer, UHBVN, Panipat.

Power supply in majority of urban areas of the city and its nearby villages was disrupted following extensive damage to low tension wires, poles, transformers and conductors yesterday. More than 60 feeders and five power houses broke down and power supply could not be restored even after 24 hours. Four buffaloes died and 10 were injured due to damage to sheds of Chopra Dairy in the Matlauda area.

“The department has suffered heavy losses due to yesterday’s weather. As many as 345 poles were uprooted in residential areas. The report of damage in the agriculture sector is yet to be assessed,” Raheja said.

“The total loss due to the storm is yet to be calculated, as our first priority is to restore electricity supply,” he asserted.
