Sonepat: Abhiyaan Foundation, a voluntary social organisation of Sonepat, has been honoured by the Governor of Haryana, Kaptan Singh Solanki, during a state-level function at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh on Saturday.

Sonepat: Abhiyaan Foundation, a voluntary social organisation of Sonepat, has been honoured by the Governor of Haryana, Kaptan Singh Solanki, during a state-level function at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh on Saturday. The foundation has been honoured for its contribution in blood donation activities. Virender Duhan, president of the foundation, said they had been active in various social welfare activities for the last six years. They had arranged donation of 1,041 units of blood in 2016-17. He said besides this, the foundation had so far donated around 4,000 units of blood. It had not only planted more than 4,000 saplings, but was also taking care of their growth. 

District Red Cross Society felicitated

Jhajjar: The District Red Cross Society, Jhajjar, has been felicitated with Haryana Disaster Relief Shield and Red Cross Special Badge for its commendable performance during the last couple of years. Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki gave away the award to Sonal Goel, Jhajjar Deputy Commissioner-cum-President, District Red Cross Society, during the Annual General Meeting of the Indian Redcross Society and St John Ambulance (India), Haryana branch, organised at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh on Saturday. “The award has been given for providing succor to earthquake-affected people in Nepal in 2015-16, collecting 15,000 blood units between 2014 and 2017, imparting first-aid training to 27,000 youths in the district and making 5,000 life members during 2016-17 for raising the funds,” said the district spokesman. 

Gangrape: Police, politicians draw flak

Faridabad: The recent gangrape incident that shocked the city seems to have become an issue of debate. “Instead of blaming the police administration directly, mediapersons have questioned the role of the ruling party politicians, including the MLA’s and MP’s, who keep exerting pressure on the police regarding the posting of officials of their choice and prosecution of suspects in many cases, and if one fails to oblige, he or she gets punished through a transfer,” said an official on condition of anonymity. While social activists like AK Gaur seek politically independent police system to curb crime, Yogesh Sharma, a former MLA, make both the police and the elected politicians accountable. A local resident said there was a need for improving the policing through better and state of the art facilities. 

Dayal Singh College gets Red Cross shield

Karnal: Dyal Singh College has bagged the prestigious ‘Youth Red Cross Shield’ on Saturday for the promotion of the Red Cross activities among the youths in college in 2016-17. Governor Kaptan Singh Solnaki handed over the shield to Dr KL Gosain, Principal of the college, during an annual general meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society in Haryana Raj Bhawan Auditorium, Chandigarh. Not only this, Prof Sushil Goel of the college was also awarded by the Governor with the Youth Red Cross Counsellor Award for the promotion of activities in the college. Dr Gosain said the college had performed various activities during 2016-17. It celebrated the International Youth Day and created awareness about HIV/AIDS. Apart from it, blood donation camp, tree plantation, and first-aid training camp were also organised in the college. Camps like disaster management, fire safety, and dental check-up was also held. The Governor also honoured Suresh Saini, a resident of Sector-4 Indri, for donating blood for 121 times. He also donated platelets for 93 times. He has been donating blood since 1986.

ISRO organises exhibition at NIT

Kurukshetra: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) organised Vikram Sarabhai space exhibition at the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra. Part of the four-day ‘Techspardha’, ISRO showcased remarkable technologies. The space agency also displayed its major technological advancements that they utilised in Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan projects. Students from educational institutes of the city were invited to the exhibition. Leading astrophysicist Dr Abhas Mitra delivered a guest lecture on ‘Black Hole Paradigm’. Several other events aimed at enhancing the technical and managerial aptitude of students, including E-modelling, boomerang, astro quiz, ‘game of brains’, also took place during the exhibition. 

Seminar on Skill India

Kurukshetra: SNRL Jai Ram Girls College at Kurukshetra’s Lohar Majra organised a seminar on ‘Skill India: Challenges and Reforms’. Several experts and academicians deliberated on the issues of skill development for the sustainable economic growth of India. Prof Dinesh Aggarwal, vice-chancellor, YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad, was the chief guest on the occasion. He emphasised on the skill-based educational system. About 180 delegates from various educational institutes presented papers on acquiring skills.  

Handball team players welcomed

Panipat: Villagers of Ahar village of the district welcomed Handball team players on Saturday, who won gold medal in the first Indo-Nepal student games held at Sidharth Nagar in Nepal from January 15 to January 17. The villagers also organised a procession from Israna to Ahar village on tractors. Kartik, a player of the team said, nine players of Ahar village participated in the two teams, including under-14 and under 17 age groups, and both teams won gold medal for the country. Neeraj, Ajay, Naveen, Himanshu participated in under-14 age group, while Jatin, Kartik, Avtaar, Ankush and Sagar played in under-17 age group. Balbir Balmiki, a Congress leader, and Ranjeet Nabardar, Balwant Singh, and Shri Krishan welcomed the players.

Kaithal DC honoured

Kaithal: Governor Prof Kaptan Singh Solanki honoured Kaithal Deputy Commissioner Sunita Verma with state award during a function held at Raj Bhawan in Chandiagrh for her outstanding services. The Deputy Commissioner, who is also an ex-officio president of the District Red Cross Society, received as many as four shields. The Governor also honoured six students, including Dursevak Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Preeti, Amrit Pal Kaur, Nirdesh Kumar and Sahil Kumar. Four teachers, including Manvinder Singh, Lakhvinder Kaur, Renu Rajput, Subhash Singh were also honoured.
