Govt likely to cancel Gurgaon medical college admissions

The Haryana Government’s decision to keep SGT Medical College, Gurgaon, out of the purview of combined counselling organised by it for admission to MBBS and BDS courses this year has fallen flat in legal scrutiny.

Following a strong worded verdict by the Supreme Court yesterday with regard to contempt petition against some private colleges in Madhya Pradesh, the Department of Medical Education and Research in Haryana has moved a proposal for cancellation of all admission done by this college and to hold fresh admissions through combined counselling.

Sources said that the proposal moved by the department today was awaiting final approval by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Eyebrows were raised when the Haryana Government had decided to keep SGT Medical College, Gurgaon, out of the purview of combined counselling for admission to MBBS and BDS courses on the basis of merit list issued by the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET).

“The mandate of our (earlier) judgment was to hold centralised entrance test followed by a centralised counselling by the state to make it one composite process. We, therefore, direct that admission to all medical seats shall be conducted by centralised counselling only by the state government and none else,” said a five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Justice AR Dave.

“If any counselling had been done by any college or university and any admission to any medical seat has been given so far, such admissions shall stand cancelled forthwith and admissions shall be given only as per the centralised counselling done by the state government,” the order said.

DK Bahera, Director, Department of Medical Education and Research, Haryana, confirmed the proposal moved by his department.

“Orders of the Supreme Court are applicable throughout the country and the verdict clearly directs the government to cancel all admission made by the SGT Medical College and fill them though combined counselling under the NEET,” Bahera said.
