Randhir Singh, a farmer of Depal village, who consumed Celphos tablets in the fields today died in a private hospital later. His cousin, Sunil Singh, said Randhir died during treatment.
Randhir’s cousin, Sunil Singh, said he had taken eight acres land on lease and also owned one and a half acres land. He sowed wheat crop in hope of getting a good yield this time as he owned some loan to the land owner for previous year due to failure of cotton crop. When Randhir harvested his crop yesterday, it yielded about eight quintal wheat per acres. He was unable to recover the input cost of the crop. Moreover, he was also due to pay Rs 1.6 lakh at the rate of Rs 20,000 per acres to the land owner, said Sunil.
He said Randhir went to the fields and consumed the sulphas tablets in the afternoon. Later he called Sunil on his mobile to inform him about his taking poison after which he was rushed to the hospital.
Meanwhile, SDM Ashok Kumar Bansal went to the hospital and directed the doctors to make all out efforts to save his life. He assured the family that the administration would bear the cost of the medical facilities to the victim.
Joginder Singh Mayyar, district president of Kisan Sabha said the farmers have been neck deep in debt in the region as most of the farmers had to take loans from private lenders or government agencies to cultivate the land.
An alarming situation seems to have emerged in Hisar district where five farmers have died – three of which committed suicide while two others died of shock.
