Efforts being made by the state government to improve the depleting groundwater in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts seem to be proving futile as the situation has been deteriorating drastically for the past a decade and a half.

Rewari’s Khol block and Mahendragarh’s Nangal Choudhary and Narnaul blocks have recorded a considerable fall in water table despite being declared dark zone owing to steep decline in the level of groundwater.

Sources said the water table had fallen by 108 feet in Khol block, 63 feet in Narnaul and 48 feet in Nangal Choudhary during the past 16 years causing a hardship to residents of all the blocks in getting water for drinking and irrigation purposes.

As per the official record, water in Khol block was available at a depth of 22.63 metre (74 feet) in 2000 while it reached up to 55.59 metre (182 feet) in 2016 indicating the alarming situation. The water table in the block was at 37.64 metre in 2005, 45.42 metre in 2010, 50.88 metre in 2014 and 53.36 metre in 2015.

Similarly, the water table in Nangal block is now at the depth of 42.72 metre (140 feet) while the figure was 27.96 metre (92 feet) in 2000. The water table in the block was recorded at 42.83 metre in 2015, 35.01 metre in 2014 and 32.4 metre in 2013.

In Narnaul block, the water table has been recorded at 53.05 metre (174 feet) this year while it was 33.83 metre (111 feet) in 2000.

Besides, Mahendragarh’s Ateli block witnessed the level of groundwater falling by 40 metre, Mahendragarh and Kanina blocks saw decline in the water table by around 12 metre each during the past 16 years.

Bawal block saw a drop of 9.4 metre between 2000 and 2016, Jatusana 5.17 metre, Nahad 5.59 metre and Rewari block 6.65 metre.

Sources said lack of firm steps for recharging groundwater was a major reason behind depleting water table in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts.
