Jat leaders flay DGP’s controversial remark

Many Jat leaders have criticised the controversial statement of Director General of Police (DGP) KP Singh. The DGP had yesterday stated that “Apart from police, common public has a right to kill anyone if they witness any anti-social element is trying to hurt the modesty of a woman or making an attempt to murder someone in self-defence”. The DGP expressed these views during a convention on “Role of Police in Panchayati Raj” here.

Yashpal Malik, national president, Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, said: “The DGP has disgraced the judiciary with his statement.” He said: “If the public will have a right to kill anyone then what the police and courts will do in such circumstances.”

The government wanted to spread ‘jungle raj’ in the state and such statements were example of it, he said. “The police want to suppress our peaceful agitation and this is the reason that the police have booked me under the sedition charge. The Supreme Court or the High Court should take notice of the statement,” he said.

Another Jat leader, Capt Bhupinder Singh said: “The DGP’s statement is very unfortunate and we condemned it.” “If people will start using this right then many will kill each other in revenge and later they will say they have killed in self-defence. It will have an adverse impact on our social fabric,” he said, adding that the DGP must think twice before giving such irresponsible statement.

“The police have started many helpline numbers and appeal to the public to use these helplines in case of emergency, but it seems that the DGP has no faith in these helplines,” he said.

Tek Ram Kandela, national convener, Sarv Khap Panchayat, said: “I am not aware of the intentions of the DGP behind such statement, but khaps never allowed anyone to take the law into their own hands.”
