A team of the Health Department today caught a woman for allegedly giving medicine for the birth of a baby boy to a decoy customer.

Deputy CMO Dr Neelam Kakkar said they got information that Meli Devi, a resident of Sinad village in Kaithal district, gives medicine for the assured birth of a baby boy. She, acting on the directions of CMO Ashok Chaudhary, along with Dr Navraj, Dr Rajesh and Dr Mangla, reached the village. They sent a decoy customer with Rs 500 to Meli Devi to get the medicine. As Meli Devi gave the medicine to the decoy customer, the team caught her red-handed with the help of the police.

She was taken to Kalayat police station and a case under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 was registered against her.

Meanwhile, Meli Devi has refuted the charge that she ever gave any medicine for the birth of a baby boy to anyone. She alleged that she had been framed in a false case. Later sarpanches and panches of some villages reached Kalayat police station and told the police that the woman is innocent.

The Deputy CMO said the department acts swiftly whenever any such case was reported to them.
