Jagadhri, known for its utensils, celebrated another Diwali today. The pilgrims, who came for the Kapal Mochan mela, took home Jagadhri-made utensils as a token of good omen.

About 10 lakh pilgrims, mainly from Punjab, visited this six-day religious mela. After taking a dip in three holy sarovars comprising Kapal Mochan, Rinmochan and Suraj Kund on Kartik Purnima today, they returned their homes. Most pilgrims buy utensils from Jagadhri, known for its brass utensils worldwide, on this occasion.

“This mela is like a second Diwali for the metal industry of Jagadhri. Manufactures, wholesalers and retailers do brisk business. Supply sometimes falls short of the demand,” said a supplier Madan Mohan.

The century-old utensil industry of Jagadhri is engaged in manufacturing of utensils of brass, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and bronze.

Sources said over 1,500 manufacturing units of this industry produced around 700 tonnes of utensils daily. Besides Jagadhri, a number of shops of retailers of utensils had come up at the mela venue.

“This year I achieved my target of selling utensils worth about Rs 25 lakh ,” said a trader, Gopi Chand.

A pilgrim, Ran Singh of Bathinda district, said that he along with his wife had been coming to the mela for the last 10 years. “As per tradition, we buy utensils after taking a dip in holy sarovars of Kapal Mochan as a token of good omen,” he said.
