The police have a reason to cheer in New Year. The district has witnessed a downfall in the crime graph, especially in rapes and murder cases.

The number of rape, murder, attempt to murder, theft, robbery, dacoity and crime against women cases declined to nearly 25 per cent in 2017 in comparison to 2016.

The police had registered 8,042 FIRs in 2017, while it was 8,193 in 2016. Last year, the police had arrested 130 members of 53 gangs and solved 278 cases.

The encounter of dreaded gangster Surinder Geong was considered to be a big achievement for the district police as Geong was allegedly involved in more than 30 cases of murder, attempt to murder and extortion.

According to the data, 71 cases of rape were registered in 2017, 94 in 2016 and 99 in 2015. Similarly, 63 cases of murder were registered in 2017, 68 in 2016 and 61 in 2015.

As many as 51 cases of attempt to murder were registered in 2017, while 67 cases were registered in 2016. As many as 334 cases of death due to negligent driving were reported in 2017, while 349 cases were registered in 2016.

The police had registered 244 cases under the NDPS Act in 2017 in comparison to 201 in 2016. The SP, Jashnadeep Singh Randhawa, said that it was a result of team work. “We have initiated several preventive measures to check crime,” he added.
