Maximum damage to wheat in Rohtak: Girdawari report

Unseasonal rain and hailstorm in March and April damaged wheat spread over 2.61 lakh acres in Haryana, while other crops, including mustard, were damaged over 13,844 acres, as per a girdawari report received by the Revenue Department.

The information received from nine districts that have suffered the brunt of unseasonal rain showed 26 per cent to 50 per cent of wheat spread over 1.42 lakh acres was damaged. Wheat on 30,048 acres and 89,794 acres suffered a damage of 51 per cent to 75 per cent and 76 per cent to 100 per cent, respectively.

The maximum damage to wheat (76 per cent to 100 per cent) was reported from Rohtak, where crop spread over 63,108 acres was lost, followed by Gurgaon (10,245 acres) and Kaithal (5,386 acres).

The damage to wheat over 5788.5 acres in Faridabad and 5,657 acres in Kaithal was between 51 per cent and 75 per cent. In all, 4,757 acres and 4,626 acres were damaged in the same range in Kurukshetra and Rohtak, respectively.

About 34,305 acres of wheat was damaged to the extent of 26 per cent to 50 per cent in Gurgaon, whereas 25,592 acres suffered damage in the same range in Faridabad. The damage in Kaithal  was over 15,359 acres and, in Kurukshetra, over 18,244 acres.

As for other crops, the maximum damage (75 per cent to 100 per cent) was reported in Rohtak and Gurgaon districts over 3,088 acres and 2,770 acres, respectively. 

While 6,782 acres of other crops suffered 26 per cent to 50 per cent of damage, 944 acres and 6,118 acres were damaged between 51 per cent and 75 per cent, and 76 per cent and 100 per cent, respectively, the report said.

The state government has, meanwhile, enhanced compensation to Rs 12,000 per acre for damage of 76 per cent and more to wheat and Rs 10,000 per acre for mustard crop in this category.  

A farmer who has sufferred a damage of 51 per cent to 75 per cent to his wheat crop will get a compensation of Rs 9,500 per acre, while a farmer will be entitled to a compensation of Rs 7,000 per acre for damage to mustard in the same category. A compensation of Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,500 per acre has been announced for wheat and mustard, respectively, for damage between 26 per cent and 50 per cent.
