Nothing much to flaunt, leaders yet to focus on achievables

Still learning the ropes

The Chautala family heir apparent Dushyant Chautala made his debut in the Lok Sabha as the youngest MP ever.

When he decided not to pursue studies and join politics, there were high hopes of him. And he lived up to them by defeating formidable opponent in HJC supremo Kuldeep Bishnoi.

The real battle started afterwards.

Dushyant has been trying hard to make his presence felt in Lok Sabha as well as in his parliamentary constituency. With 89 per cent attendance, he raised several issues in the Lok Sabha. He claimed to have asked 229 questions and participated in 58 debates, besides introducing a private members Bill demanding setting up of a separate bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Gurgaon.

His priorities include electrification of “dhanis”, providing water and irrigation facility. He provided Rs 1.02 crore from his share of MPLAD funds for the electrification of 119 “dhanis”.

Dushyant raised in Lok Sabha the demand for canal water for 12 days a month in Budak and Balsamand regions. Besides, the INLD MP demanded to waive debt of farmers to bail them out of financial crisis in view of the crop failure because of unseasonal rain and hailstorm.

“I want to develop Hisar as counter-magnetic city. I am pursuing this with the Centre and met Union Ministers in this connection,” he said, adding he had been demanding a horticulture university in Hisar and a cancer institute in Agroha Medical College.

The INLD leader has released Rs 2.5 crore from his share of MPLAD funds for the construction of chaupals, dharamshalas, laying of streets, irrigation and water supplies.

Congress leader Sampat Singh said it was too early to judge Dushyant’s performance. “The INLD is not in power, but the party seems eager to get along with the ruling BJP. It’s good that the MP raises people’s issues. I am ready to cooperate and share my experience in his efforts for the public good,” he said.

Aim is to make Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a success

The Bhiwani-Mahendergarh MP, Dharambir Singh, stunned his own party, the BJP, when he batted for free water, electricity and double compensation for hail-hit farmers in his speech in Parliament.

Of total House sittings, former Congressman attended sessions on 81 days.

According to a Lok Sabha website, he asked 12 questions related to linking of major rivers to save agriculture. But he did not participate in any debate or asked any supplementary questions pertaining to the development of his constituency.

Dharambir earned people’s wrath for not removing toll points in Tosham represented by CLP leader Kiran Choudhry in the Assembly.

The resumption of mining at Tosham hills, a promise made by Dharambir during the elections, has not been fulfilled. The construction of a medical college in Bhiwani is stuck. “Things are under process. Mining and medical college may take another year to become a reality,” the MP said.

Dharambir attempted to corner his own government after he took charge of the Congress-backed faction of the Haryana Olympic Association. Dharambir was the CPS in the Hooda regime. BJP’s Radaur MLA Shyam Singh Rana charged Dharambir of attempting to destabilise sport activities.

“I see no issue in joining the Congress-backed sports body in spite of being a BJP MP,” Dharambir said.

Dharambir has utilised maximum share of his MPLAD funds (Rs 2.5 crore) on the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. “The first installment of MPLAD fund has been released. A committee of Bhiwani and Mahendergarh senior administrative officials was formed and tractor-trollies and loader machines were bought. Nine nagar palikas that are part of my segment have been given the equipment to make the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a success,” he said.

Congress former MP Shruti Choudhry said Dharambir had failed on all fronts.

Sat Singh, Ravinder Saini

‘Controversial’ K’shetra MP plans big for segment

Rajkumar Saini had a controversial first year as an MP. His remarks regarding regular government employees and his stand against the Jat reservation led to protests in Haryana. He has threatened to resign if the share of OBCs in the reservation is reduced to accommodate Jats.

“I speak truth and it becomes a controversy,” the MP says.

Saini has 99 per cent attendance in Parliament — better than the national average (85 per cent) and state average (87 per cent), but his participation in debates has been below average. The MP participated in 13 debates in the past one year, while he asked only 10 questions, the least compared with other MPs from Haryana.

“I raise my voice whenever I get a chance,” he said.

On his performance, Saini said: “The Centre has included Kurukshetra in the Krishna Circuit, 20 railway underpasses have been approved and there will be no unmanned railway gate in my constituency. Kendriya Vidyalaya has been sanctioned in Mathana village.”

He aims to make Kurukshetra a major tourist destination. Saini seemed satisfied with his performance. But ask state INLD chief Ashok Arora. “The only thing the Kurukshetra MP has done is disturbing the communal harmony. He has not taken any initiative to bring big projects. The sanctioned and announced projects are on paper only,” he said. Several demands such as setting up industries, employment generation and direct rail line from Kuruksehtra to Yamunanagar are to be addressed.

About the future initiatives, he said: “I will try to bring a technical institute so that youths can get skill knowledge and jobs can be generated. Besides, I will demand an airport for the religious city.”

The MP has released more than Rs 86 lakh from his MPLAD funds. Saini has adopted Sangan village in Kaithal district. Round-the-clock electricity supply and a solar power project for nearly Rs 10 crore have been proposed.

In middle of party politics

A close look at the performance of Karnal MP Ashwini Chopra shows he has yet to emerge from party politics. Chopra won his debut election by defeating three-time MP Arvind Sharma.

The MP has been successful in getting the construction of 200 toilets in collaboration with Bindeshwar Pathak of Sulabh International.

In the past one year, he remained in the limelight because of his “cold war” with Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and remained absent from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” rally in his constituency in Panipat.

Rao Indrajeet Singh became the MP for the third time and made it to Central ministry. He is the Minister of State for Planning, and MoS for Defence.

Ever since he assumed office, he has announced several projects. These include Information Management and Analysis Centre, the nerve centre of Navy being operational, setting up a unit of paramilitary forces at Nuh and setting up a horticulture university in Bawal.

“The MP has ignored Mewat. The areas received partly sum in the past one year. Be it his visits or grants, Rewari tops his priority and Mewat figures nowhere,” said Aftab Ahmed, former Transport Minister.
