Industries and Environment Minister Vipul Goel on Sunday pulled up officials over their alleged failure to maintain proper cleanliness in the District Sports Complex here.

During his visit to the complex in the morning, he noticed unclean washrooms and garbage strewn around in the complex.

“Kuchh to sharam karo, jab pehle se pata tha mein yahan aa raha hoon, aap logon ne toilet bhi check karna theek nahin samjha” (You should be ashamed of yourself, you did not bother to check the toilet when you knew that I will be here), said the minister, who was appalled to see the stinking washrooms adjoining the swimming pool and the main building.

Goel asked the officials to get the civic facilities restored within a couple of days and warned of action against those who would fail to ensure adequate cleanliness. He also asked the franchise owner of the swimming pool to either put the things in order or close down the business.

He said all those who use the facilities here should be issued identity cards and no outsiders be allowed inside the complex. Hundreds of sportspersons practice here for various events, including skating, gymnastics, football, volleyball, basketball and athletics, but facilities like safe drinking water and clean toilets have been missing.

Admitting that Goel expressed his unhappiness, Amardeep Jain, Estate Officer, HUDA, said the responsibility of maintenance and housekeeping was with the district sports office and the department may soon outsource the job to an agency. Besides providing CCTV coverage, the complex would have security guards and regular staff for maintaining cleanliness, he added.
