The police have arrested a murder convict on the charges of threatening a resident of a nearby village and demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh from him.
Sunil (32), alias Gyani, is serving a life term for murder and was out on parole.
The police said Sunil contacted complainant Jitender on the phone recently and told him not to demand money that he (Jitender) had lent to Anil Rawat, a resident of Bahbalpur village.
Jitender said he had recently asked Anil, one of his acquaintances, to return Rs 2 lakh he had loaned him. He told the police that instead of paying back the money, Anil contacted Sunil who was released on parole a few days ago.
Sunil contacted Jitender on his mobile phone and told him to forget the money he had lent to Anil, as he was his ‘brother’. It is alleged that Sunil not only threatened Jitender, but also asked him to give him Rs 5 lakh soon or face dire consequences. The accused allegedly told the complainant that he would not hesitate from eliminating him.
The police have rearrested Sunil, said Sube Singh, a police spokesman. A local court remanded him in two-day police custody on Monday.
