Panipat, May 14
The strike by sanitation workers has turned the city into a dumping ground.
Heaps of garbage is lying near schools and parks. Pachranga Bazaar, Insaar Bazaar, SD College road market, Model Town, Tehsi camp, Kacha camp area, and main roads and streets resemble a dumping yard.
Vipul Sharma, incharge of the Panipat zone said, garbage collection had been badly affected. “I lifted garbage on Sunday with help from the police and the MC. On Monday, I did not get any support,” he said.
“I have more than 400 employees, including six zone incharges, 110 drivers, 100 garbage rickshaw-pullers and 200 helpers, to lift garbage. But all of them are sitting idle for the last six days,” Sharma said.
Nagar Palika Karamchari Sangh members, meanwhile, staged a dharna in the MC’s office on sixth consecutive day on Monday.
Subhash Chandalia, a member of the sangh, said about 800 employees, including safai karamcharis and firemen, were on strike.
Shiv Prasad Sharma, MC Commissioner, said the civic body had asked a private company to lift garbage.
