The police have served notices on 29 Jat leaders of the district for not to take part in the agitation proposed to be launched on June 5 by the Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS).

Kaptaan Singh, Master Kapur Singh, Nafe Singh Nain, Ishwar Singh and Capt Randhir Singh were among the prominent Jat leaders who were served notices.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Kumar Arya said the police would not allow anyone to disturb law and order in the district and these leaders had been asked to stay away from the agitation. The SSP said that these leaders had addressed public rallies during the previous Jat agitation in February. “We have collected details of their properties and they would not be able to sell or mortgage their properties till further orders,” he said.

Malik claims support of 70% of khaps

Yashpal Malik, national president, ABJASS, today said that the organisation had never asked any khap to support their agitation. “Knowing the cause of our peaceful demonstration, 70 per cent khaps of the state have extended their support to us,” he claimed. Malik criticised the statements of some khap leaders against the samiti’s agitation next month.

He alleged that some khap leaders were playing into the hands of the state government. This is the only reason they are speaking against our agitation. Such leaders are well connected with the government,” he said.

He said that they were receiving immense support from the villages of the khaps whose leaders were against their peaceful protest. “We believe in peace and our objective is not to create ruckus anywhere. Our agitation will be peaceful and we will raise our voice for the release of innocent persons who were arrested without any ground,” he said.

The Jind police had booked Malik and some other leaders of the samiti under the charge of sedition on May 26.
