Pressure built by Haryana Police on the family of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and conducting raids after obtaining arrest warrants for Honeypreet Insan helped force the Dera chief’s absconding “adopted daughter” “appear”, through her counsel for seeking anticipatory bail.

Commissioner of Police Arshinder Singh Chawla on Tuesday admitted that the immense pressure the Panchkula police had put on several fronts, including raids at several places, must have worked in forcing Honeypreet to approach the court, though he said moving application for anticipatory bail is every individual’s right.

“I feel that even if Honeypreet’s lawyer had approached the Panchkula police instead of the Delhi High Court, she would have got a fair deal, as they only wanted her to join investigation,” Chawla added.

The Tribune has learnt that though Ram Rahim’s family, especially his elder daughter Charanpreet Kaur Insan, were already on the radar and she had been questioned on Honeypreet’s disappearance, the police increased pressure on them on Monday after their involvement became public.

In a news-item ‘Honeypreet may be in captivity: Kin’, The Tribune had revealed on Monday that Charanpreet had “summoned” Honeypreet from Hanumangarh, where she was staying at the residence of her brother Sahil’s in-laws, to Dera chief’s native village Gurusar Modia on the evening of August 29.

The next day, Charanpreet was alleged to have handed over Honeypreet to Rakesh Bai and Phoola, both trusted men of the Dera head. She was since missing.

The fact had come to the notice of an SIT of the Panchkula police when it raided Gurusar Modia on September 21.

Sources said the police increased pressure on Ram Rahim’s family on Monday asking them to either produce Honeypreet or be prepared to face the music.

Earlier, when Charanpreet had joined investigation, she admitted that Honeypreet came to Gurusar Modia on August 29 and left with Rakesh Bai and Phoola the next day, but had claimed that she did so of her own volition.

Sources said the twin action of increasing pressure on Ram Rahim’s family and intensifying efforts for Honeypreet’s arrest by obtaining her warrant seemed to have worked for the police.
