New Delhi, March 31

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Haryana government to deduct only 30 per cent from the compensation to be paid to the farmers as development charges for the land acquired in Harsuru and Garouli villages in Gurgaon district in January 2006.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had allowed a deduction of 40 per cent.

A Bench headed by Justice MB Lokur, however, refused to enhance the compensation from Rs 68 lakh per acre for the 1,590 acres acquired in five villages of Gurgaon district. The other three villages are Khandsa, Narsinghpur and Mohammadpur Jharsa. The apex court said the deduction would remain at 15 per cent as directed by the high court.

The farmers whose land had been acquired had filed some 75 petitions challenging the high court’s September 2014 verdict.
