Schools, colleges need to have counsellors: Experts

HISAR: Concerned over psychological and mental health problems among students, the psychology department of three universities has urged the state government to take a slew of measures.

Concerned over psychological and mental health problems among students, the psychology department of three universities has urged the state government to take a slew of measures. One of the proposals is to appoint counsellors in all schools, colleges and universities.

The matter was discussed at MDU, Rohtak, during a January 4 meeting of chairpersons of psychology departments — Prof Sandeep Singh of the Guru Jambheshwar University of Science of Technology (GJUST), Hisar; Prof Nav Rattan Sharma of the MDU; and Prof Rohtash from Kurukshetra University.

Besides proposing the appointment of counsellors, the chairpersons said all education institutes must have a personality development calendar to help students groom themselves for the challenges of life.

They also proposed that psychology department of universities should be roped in to launch programmes for the psychological well-being of students.
