Sisodia announces Rs 2 crore for Sindhu, Rs 1 crore for Sakshi

NEW DELHI/ROHTAK: Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday announced an award of Rs 2 crore for Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu and Rs 1 crore for bronze medal-winner wrestler Sakshi Malik.

Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday announced an award of Rs 2 crore for Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu and Rs 1 crore for bronze medal-winner wrestler Sakshi Malik.

Sisodia also visited Sakshi’s native place Rohtak.

He also announced a direct promotion for Sakshi’s father Sukhbir Malik who is a bus conductor with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

Meanwhile, the Haryana government today announced cash awards for shuttler Sindhu, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, sprinter Lalita Babar for their splendid performance at Rio Olympic games.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, said an official release here.

While Sindhu will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh, Lalita Babar and Dipa Karmakar will be awarded Rs 15 lakh each.

The coach of wrestler Sakshi Malik, who won bronze medal at Rio, will be given Rs 10 lakh, an official spokesman said.

The decision to award these Olympians from outside Haryana would inspire the girls across the country to pursue sports and bring laurels to the nation, the Chief Minister said.

In keeping with the sports policy of the state government, Sakshi Malik will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 2.50 crore.

Under the policy, winner of gold medal from Haryana in Olympics will get Rs 6 crore, silver Rs 4 crore, and bronze Rs 2.50 crore.

Sakshi's employers, the Indian Railways, will also honour her with a cash award of Rs 60 lakh for her feat.

The Railway Ministry had announced before the start of the Games that cash awards of Rs 1 cr, Rs 75 lakh and Rs 50 lakh will be given to medal winners and a further Rs 10 lakh for qualifying.

The 23-year-old Rohtak-based Sakshi clinched the bronze in the women’s freestyle 58 kg wrestling category with a spirited comeback victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan.

With this win, Malik becomes the fourth Indian wrestler to win a medal in Olympics after KD Jadhav, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt. — Agencies
