The authorities have been filling Karan Lake using tubewells for six months as the Rs 1-crore pipeline laid to provide water to the lake from the Chamarkhera canal has been damaged by farmers at several places.

The flow in the Western Yamuna Canal had been restricted about six months ago due to repair works that were to be undertaken along its embankments, owing to which Karan Lake authorities cannot draw water from the canal.

Instead of reviving the pipeline, which could have been used as an alternative to fill up the lake, the authorities have been left with no other option but to use tubewells installed around the lake to maintain its water level. Farmers fear decline in underground water table.

People living in the vicinity of the lake said if the authorities repaired the pipeline, there would be no need to depend on tubewells or the Western Yamuna Canal.

A farmer said when the pipeline was laid, it was claimed that there was no need to withdraw water from the Western Yamuna Canal.

Vijender Sharma, in-charge of Karan Lake, “I am not aware of this pipeline. I would write to the higher authorities to repair the pipeline,” he said.
