A small state with less than 1.4 per cent of the country’s geographical area, Haryana is among the top six states which account for 75 per cent of the country’s total export of goods and services, according to the Economic Survey 2018.
The survey data has revealed that Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Haryana, in that order, account for 75 per cent of India’s total exports.
Maharashtra tops with 22.3 per cent, followed by Gujarat at 17.2 per cent, Karnataka at 12.7 per cent, Tamil Nadu at 11.5 per cent, Telangana at 6.4 per cent and Haryana at 4.9 per cent.
Sources said export data for individual states revealed that the prosperity of states was related to their export performance. The sources further said it was for the first time that there was an opportunity to know state-wise distribution of export of goods and services.
Goods and services data of the country showed that Haryana was among top five states in exports and internal trade surplus (amount by which value of exports exceeds cost of imports) of goods and services.
The state was third in the five largest exporting states – Maharashtra (15.7 per cent), Gujarat (11.3 per cent), Haryana (9.4 per cent), Tamil Nadu (8.4 per cent) and Karnataka (7.0 per cent).
It was placed at the top among the five largest internal trade surplus states – Haryana (26.1 per cent), Gujarat (20.1 per cent), Odisha (6.6 per cent), Maharashtra (5.0 per cent) and Tamil Nadu (2.2 per cent).
The five largest importing states were Maharashtra (13.7 per cent), Tamil Nadu (7.8 per cent), Uttar Pradesh (7.8 per cent), Karnataka (7.3 per cent) and Gujarat (7.1 per cent). Haryana with 6.9 per cent was placed sixth in this respect.
“Haryana is the fifth largest contributor of GST in the country with an average collection of over Rs 5,000 crore every month,” said Sanjeev Kaushal, Additional Chief Secretary, Excise and Taxation.
As far as SGST was concerned, it was merely one-fourth of the total contribution to GST at between Rs 1,200 crore and Rs 1,300 crore per month. Kaushal attributed this to the small size of the state, that explained less consumption and less SGST.
