Teen killed for honour, Hisar family booked

A 14-year-old girl was strangled to death for honour by her family and her body was cremated in the village at midnight last Thursday.

The police have registered a case against girl’s father Ramchander, mother Sarbati, uncles Ghanshyam and Raja and cousin Dharampal. Barwala DSP Rajbir Singh said Ramchander was arrested today and efforts were being made to nab the remaining four accused.

Sources said Nirmala, a class IX student in the village government high school, reportedly had an affair with a youth of the same caste in the village. They said the girl was pregnant.

The accused father said she had brought a bad name to the family. “We decided to kill the girl to protect family’s honour and cremated her body in the thick of the night,” the father told the police. Sources said the girl was stopped from attending the school two weeks ago.

The family also consulted doctors in Hisar for abortion. However, the doctors asked the family to report the matter to the police.

“When they were unable to terminate her pregnancy, the family decided to kill her. Some villagers spotted the body being cremated and informed the police,” said a villager.

The DSP said a police team had visited the cremation ground and samples of the remains were collected. “A case of murder and causing disappearance of evidence of offence has been registered against five members of the family. The Barwala police station SHO has been assigned the investigation,” he said.
