Rewari, November 16

Uncertainty looms large over the first semester examinations of various undergraduate (UG) courses being run by government and private degree colleges in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts.

Though Indira Gandhi University (IGU) claims to be fully prepared for the exams, it cannot conduct it following the recent High Court order staying the operation of notification about redefining territorial jurisdiction of the state universities. The exams are scheduled to commence on November 28.

Colleges have demanded the state government to clarify which university will conduct the exams if the HC does not vacate the stay on the next date of hearing on November 27.

All degree colleges located in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts had come under the IGU from the MDU, Rohtak, after the government redefined territorial jurisdiction of the state universities in June. The colleges have also deposited requisite fees to the IGU for running their courses, say sources.

“Fate of thousands of students enrolled in these colleges hangs in balance as it is still not clear who will conduct the exams. The IGU is unable to do so due to legal obligations, while the MDU has not yet communicated to the colleges in this respect,” said Satish Khola, president of the Haryana Self-Finance Private Colleges’ Association (HSFPCA), adding that the prevailing confusion was adversely affecting students.

Khola said most of the colleges wanted to remain with the IGU, hence the association had challenged the stay order in the Supreme Court.

“We are ready to conduct the exams if the court allows us on the next date of hearing,” said DP Goyal, Controller of Examination (CoE), IGU, while Vice Chancellor (VC) SP Bansal said the Directorate of Higher Education (DHE) had been urged to clarify about the semester exams.

Meanwhile, BS Sandhu, CoE, MDU, said they had no information about court’s stay over the government’s notification.

“Since students of the first semester of various UG courses being run by the colleges in Rewari and Mahendragarh are enrolled with the IGU, the MDU cannot conduct the exams,” he added.
