Shimla, October 24

Locals have come out in support of the two families whose babies were swapped. They said the police should investigate the case, bringing the erring staff of Kamla Nehru Hospital (KNH) to book.

They held a protest seeking strict action against the staff. The police should not spare the culprits who tried to ruin the lives of the babies.

The two families have been under immense stress for the last five months. They will swap the babies on October 26 as per the High Court orders.

The Shimla police have sought the CCTV footage from the KNH authorities to track the movements of the staff in the labour room on May 25 and 27.

Both families — Sheetal and her husband Anil, Anjna and her husband Jitender Thakur — said they would pay each other frequent visits to meet the kids.

They demanded action against the KNH staff saying the guilty should be brought to book. “We have suffered a lot all this while. No parents should be made to suffer this way,” they said.

“Both babies are my children. We have spent sleepless nights all these months. I was told that I had delivered a baby boy on the night of May 26 at the KNH,” said Sheetal, a staff nurse at the IGMC, who has turned out to be the biological mother of the baby boy swapped on May 26. “We will continue to meet the girl as she was with us for five months,” said Sheetal.

Anjna and Jitender Thakur shared the same feelings. “It is emotionally difficult for me to believe that he is not my child and difficult to part with him. But both are our children,” said Anjna, who is the biological mother of the baby girl.
