People living in Sihor Balla village in the Changar area of Hamirpur and Kangra district were happy as a bridge, built at a cost of Rs 9 crore, was connected to the road on the Hamirpur side after a long wait. Notably, the bridge over the Beas was constructed by the Public Works Department (PWD), but it could not be connected to the roads on both sides. A delay was causing resentment among villagers who were forced to live in isolation even after 67 years of Independence. The issue had been raised in The Tribune on September 15 last year.

Villagers of Sihor Balla, though living in Kangra district, had Sujanpur Tihra as the nearest town, 6 km from the village, which provided all basic facilities, including health, education and daily-use items, to them.

Rakesh Kumar, a resident of the village who did his schooling from the Sainik School at Sujanpur Tihra, said the construction of the bridge had given a new lease of life to the entire area. The village that was also neglected on the political and administrative fronts had now become part of the mainstream. Moreover, they had a permanent fear of the river that had swallowed many lives from the area.

Everyone in the village was happy and thankful to the government as their dream had come true.

Women of the village said they were afraid to use the old rope bridge and feared that their children might fell into the river. They said even people rejected marriage proposals of their daughters due to the lack of a proper approach route.

They said earlier they had to walk 6 km to board a bus and then 25 km to reach Sujanpur. But now it took only 10 minutes to reach the market in Sujanpur.

The bridge was not officially inaugurated. It was opened to traffic on the directions of the government. Rajinder Singh Rana, Vice-Chairman of the Disaster Management Board, said the bridge would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister soon.
