Shimla, December 11

Accusing Himachal Pradesh University of not filling the PhD seats even after the lapse of one year, the Ambedkar Student Association (ASA) has demanded that an inquiry into the delay by the UGC.

State president of the association Suresh Saini said a General House meeting of the association expressed concern over the issue and said it was surprising that in spite of advertisement issued thrice for inviting applications, the admissions in several departments and MBA had not been done.

This had spoiled one year of students and some could not apply for scholarships for the last one year and as the university is closing on December 31 for winter vacations. He said the admission process must be completed by December 20.

The students belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe category are the worst sufferers as most of the unfilled PhD seats are reserved for these castes, he said, adding that seats should also be reserved for the OBC category.

It said the employment exchange on the university campus had been closed for the last one year, forcing the students to visit their home towns for registration and demanded that the exchange should be re-opened and made functional.

Free internet services should be provided to students in the university. There was no computer centre in the university where they could type their thesis and take prints. Food in the shops on the campus should be cheap and of good quality.

The ASA has urged the Vice Chancellor to address these issues at the earliest and said that they would apprise the Governor who is also the Chancellor of HPU, in case their demands are not fulfilled.
