Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh yesterday flayed Bikram Thakur, BJP MLA from Jaswan Pragpur, for opposing a new government college being proposed by the state government in Jandpur area of the Jaswan Pragpur Assembly constituency.

Addressing a public meeting at Jandaur, near Sansarpur Terrace in Jaswan Pragpur constituency today, the CM said it was unfortunate that a sitting MLA, who was supposed to work for the welfare of the people and undertake development works of the area, was opposing the setting up of a college at Jandaur and had sought a stay from the court in this regard. He should have learnt a lesson from local pradhan Shrestha Devi who had donated land for the college, he said.

The CM alleged Bikram was playing petty politics over the new government college for reasons best known to him.

“It is for the first time that I have seen a representative of the people, whom they voted to power, created a bottleneck in setting up a college. Such a person can never be a true benefactor of the people,” said the CM.

He said Rs 15 crore was to be sanctioned for the construction of the college at Jandaur, which would have benefited children. Irrespective of the intensions of the MLA, the area would get a college. Till the time, the college building was constructed, the classes would be started elsewhere, the CM said.

He exhorted the people never to vote for a candidate, who created obstacles in development works.

Infighting in the Congress

Infighting in the Congress came to the fore during the programme of the CM at Pragpur later in the evening. At Pragpur, former MLA Yog Raj came to the CM’s programme and was provided a chair at the stage. Surinder Mankotia, vice-chairman of the Employees’ Welfare Board and who had organised the programme, got down from the stage and sat down among the gathering. Congress leaders, including Chief Parliamentary Secretary Neeraj Bharti, made fervent appeals from the stage asking Surinder Mankotia to come on the stage. The drama lasted about five minutes after which Neeraj Bharti left his seat for Surinder Mankotia and he was accommodated on the stage.

Earlier, Surinder Mankotia welcomed and honoured the CM. He also listed developments of the area and thanked the Chief Minister for initiating various steps for development of Jaswan Pragpur. He criticised the sitting MLA from Jaswan Pragpur and alleged that he played politics in the name of education and took a stay from the court for halting the process of foundation stone of the college at Jandaur. This step of the MLA deprived students of quality and higher education. The BJP MLA was misguiding people of the area that the Chief Minister’s tour had been cancelled, Surinder Mankotia alleged.

Kangra: Earlier, the Chief Minister was accorded a welcome on reaching Talwara. Surinder Mankotia, Chairman, State Employees Welfare Board, welcomed the Chief Minister. He urged the Chief Minister to upgrade the road from Dhaliara to Sansarpur Terrace.

Vikram Sharma Dickie, secretary, HP Congress Committee, abstained from the Chief Minister’s programme in protest regarding the Central University issue. He said the CUHP was a long-pending issue and Virbhadra should have accepted the demand of Dehra people.
